Intent
In the White Rose Federation, we want our pupils to choose to seek active, healthy lifestyles. Our PE curriculum strives to ensure that pupils develop a broad range of skills and experience a range of activities that help them to develop their health, fitness, well-being and personal skills. Our progression framework ensures that pupils experience a variety of individual and team sports, building upon and developing their skills as they move from the Early Years through to Year 6.
Our aim is that our high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to pursue active, sporting, healthy lifestyles. We aim for all of our pupils to experience the enjoyment, benefits and successes that come from participating in a range of individual and team sporting activities. We also provide opportunities for our pupils to compete in sport and other activities in a competitive environment, in order to build character and help to embed values, such as perseverance, resilience, fairness and respect.
The national curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all pupils:
- develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities;
- are physically active for sustained periods of time;
- engage in competitive sports and activities;
- lead healthy, active lives.
Implementation
Pupils in the White Rose Federation participate in weekly high-quality PE sessions for two hours per week. Our teachers, teaching staff and coaches from First Step PE use Complete PE as a guide to both plan their lessons and to assess pupils accurately. Our curriculum has been carefully mapped out over a two-year rolling programme that ensures that our pupils are exposed to a wide range of sports and activities, with opportunities to build upon skills, knowledge and understanding gained in previous learning. Lessons are adapted and differentiated to ensure that all pupils can thrive, with challenge provided to those pupils demonstrating and applying high levels of performance, skills, knowledge and understanding.
In Year 5 and 6, our pupils PE experience is enhanced by a visit to a Robinwood Outdoor Activity Centre. This trip offers an opportunity for pupils to work outside their usual sites, friendship groups and comfort zones in order to develop independence, resilience, problem-solving, communication, teamwork and friendship.
In Key Stage 2, pupils form the White Rose Federation attend Selby Leisure Centre to have swimming lessons, which are planned, taught and assessed alongside trained on-site swimming instructors.
Impact
At the White Rose Federation, we want our pupils to choose to seek active, healthy lifestyles. By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study. We also intend to give our pupils transferable skills that give them the ability to take the initiative and become young leaders who can organise, motivate, evaluate performance and develop excellent sporting attitudes.
When pupils leave our school, we want our children to have positive attitudes towards physical activity and have an understanding of its importance in promoting long-term health and well-being. We also strive to ensure that all our children have the ability to swim at least 25 metres before the end of Year 6 and have knowledge of how to remain safe in and around water.
