KS2 Tax

Class 3 recently took part in an interactive HM Revenue & Customs focussed learning session, all about understanding what ‘tax’ is. The children learnt that taxes are the money that people and businesses must pay the government, in order to pay for the things that are important to us and our families, our local communities and the country. The session introduced the idea that as responsible citizens we all make small contributions towards the things that benefit everyone.

After the class discussed what tax is, who collects it and why it is important, Ashton found that: ‘taxes are a percentage of money that is given to the government to help emergency services to earn their wages’.

The children took part in activities which made them decide which items they thought we must pay tax on and which we don’t, identify the work HMRC does and the important role it plays. New vocabulary learnt included: income tax, profit, tax, taxation, and value added tax (VAT). Tax Facts
