This half term, our children in Class 2 finished their Great Fire of London history topic in style!

They wrapped up in warm clothes and took part in an outdoor workshop led by Alfresco Learning visitor (Angharad), focusing on the housing and bakery from the time of the great fire - 1666.

To start, the children learnt how to weave sticks (wattle) and add mud/ 'faeces' to their structures (daub) to create the style of walls and buildings that were traditional in this time. The children were asked to spend some time reflecting on what the weather may have been like prior to the fire and how this, combined with the materials, will have impacted the strength of the flames.

Following this, they were tasked with selecting materials out of a selection of tin foil, stone, clay and wood to recreate a much better, stronger and waterproof oven for Thomas Farriner. The children got stuck in and were very proud of the work they completed.

They were a credit to our school and Angharad was blown away by their history knowledge!

Oscar said of the morning's events: 'I loved it - we got really muddy making a wall'.

Ophelia described part of her activity: 'We did a wattle and daub wall. We also made ovens for Thomas Farriner'.
