Pottery Workshop

Last Wednesday afternoon, Class 3 were joined by Naomi and Pepe, of Jasmine Pottery Studio, for an afternoon of clay work. We used the coil method to build our own pots in similar styles to those of ancient civilisations. This was a fabulous way to explore the similarities and differences between our history topic of Ancient Maya and how modern ceramics are made. We learnt how clay was dug from the banks of rivers and how other substances such as ash were then added to strengthen and stabilise the clay. We also explored how difficult it must have been to make pottery without a kiln, instead using the sun to naturally dry them (we did wonder if the recent sunny spell was hot enough to dry our pottery!).

We carefully designed our own unique pieces of pottery, carefully considering the style and function of our projects.

Naomi and Pepe helped us to design and paint our pottery, they then took our masterpieces away for drying, firing, and glazing. We can't wait to see what the final pieces look like.

Jake said ‘My favourite part was when Pepe taught me a different way of shaping my vase’ and Bromley said ‘I enjoyed blending the clay so that the pieces joined together. I didn't think I would be very good at it but I was really proud of my vase’.

Class 3 would like to thank Jasmine Pottery Studio for a fun and creative afternoon; we look forward to seeing the pottery they create with Class 2 this coming week.
