Decoupage or découpage is the art of decorating an object by gluing coloured paper cutouts onto it in combination with special effects and other decorative elements. Commonly, an object like a small box or an item of furniture is covered by cutouts from magazines or from purpose-manufactured papers.

During the first three art lessons with Class 3, they looked at the Amazon and natural environments. The children then did two additional art activities inspired by the story that they're currently reading, 'The Journey to the River Sea'. Based on the Amazon, the children made some brightly coloured Amazon rainforest exotic birds with leaf backgrounds for their work display. The first was a Decoupage Toucan, layering shapes of card on top one another to build the form of the bird. The second was a three-dimensional Scarlet Macaw with a pompom body made from tissue paper.

We have, under Mrs Seath's supervision, followed her step-by-step decoupage guide to create our own Amazon 3D birds. How effective do these look?
